New tasting room born from deep vintner roots

They have been making the wine at Per Bacco Cellars in San Luis Obispo, and they have been sharing a tasting room for two years with Edna Valley's Saucelito Canyon Vineyard.

They also bought 130 acres on Orcutt Road in Edna Valley, where they plan to build their own winery and tasting room, but the progress has been slow.

"It's going forward," Ortman says, "like the world's slowest train."

"We both grew out of the Saucelito space," Lisa Ortman explains, "and since Orcutt Road wasn't happening, we thought we better find a new space."

Even though the new tasting room is small — only 700 square feet — it's enough room to showcase all their wines.

The new location, just a block and a half from Paso Robles Park, is ideal.

A spot for fine wines

WINE Knot opened its doors with a cosy and intimate soft launch that saw a brief introduction of their wine cellar to friends and business partners of the outlet.

The new outlet is a picture of wooden touches with a warm ambience that is very similar to the oak and wooded elements of wines, making it a welcoming place for all patrons.

The establishment currently carries wine selections from the conventional wine producing countries including Australia, Chile, France, Spain, New Zealand as well as South Africa.

The soft launch was organised together with wine distributor Nam Lee Chong that prepared four different wines for the tasting session.

Each year Trapiche makes dozens of single vineyard wines, each representing a specific vineyard and expressing a specific terroir. After what must be round after round of brutal tasting and hairsplitting, they choose and release the three finest Malbecs in the world. The goal of Trapiche and Daniel Pi the wine maker, is to take Malbec to it's logical extreme of quality and varietal expression. The wine more closely resembles Classified Bordeaux (after all Malbec is a Bordeaux Grape), than it does your average Malbec.

Warming a beloved's heart

Sweeten to taste with manuka honey or brown sugar, then add a bottle of wine, red for preference but white is fine. Re-heat, but do not boil, then serve.

Not, perhaps, our normal aperitif, but it worked a treat on this night.

A more common pre-prandial drink was served at a celebration dinner at Rydges hotel recently, where sous chef Michael Sullivan, winner of the New Zealand arm of the international Chaine des Rotisseurs competition, could showcase his talents before heading off to Paris for the world finals in September.

The evening got off to a flying start with Nobilo Methode Traditionnelle 2005, a blend of pinot noir and pinot meunier. It was deliciously fruity with a citrus tang that cleansed, refreshed and sharpened the palate. Ooh, yes, please, I'd love another glass.

A little drop of heaven

Sourced from a block of vines, some going back 140 years, the winemaking had been kept simple: open vat fermentation, basket pressing, no tannin addition, 18 months in new and older French oak.

The 2004 vintage, a naturally blessed season across most of Australia, is the perfect homage to Brother May, even if the wine is priced at a slightly immodest (at least by Jesuit standards) $60 a bottle.

The '04 Brother May shiraz has an honest, almost rustic personality driven by plenty of blueberry/dark berries and earthiness upfront, finishing soft and velvety. The background eucalypt presence is very Clare, very Sevenhill.

It's bigger and richer than any of the usual commercial Sevenhill reds, so can it be duplicated every year? The simple answer is: no.

The latest bit of hypocrisy brought to you by Coors

Back in 2001, Charles Woodson first met his cellar master in Napa 2001, while still with the Raiders. He appears to be a wine enthusiast and because of that, he will be debuting his first wine in September. His name and signature appear on the label and in the marketing materials. Nothing wrong yet, right?

Apparently he did an interview discussing his enthusiasm for wine. He was also planning a public event for the debut of his wine. The NFL caught wind of this and informed Woodson that the league had a Goodell-instituted policy, which stated that any interviews supporting alcohol would be seen as an endorsement and "may have a detrimental effect on the great number of young fans who follow our game."

I hope I'm not the only one that sees the NFL's position as borderline insanity. If you don't, head over to NFL.com's coverage of Super Bowl XLII commercials and check out all the Bud Light ads. Or maybe the announcement by the NFL in 2005 that Coors would be the "Official Beer Sponsor" through the 2010 season. Of course the Coors deal was implemented before Der Kommissar took charge and I'm sure he'll denounce all alcohol sponsorships when they expire.

July Sips and Slurps

He has been lured back to his winemaking roots, returning to Pindar as head winemaker. Moving from a 7,000-case winery to a 70,000-case one will be a challenge, as will getting his considerable talents wrapped around a large and diverse portfolio, but Les is up to the task. He has trained with some of Long Island's best winemakers, including Kip Bedell and Roman Roth. At Jamesport, Les really seemed to be hitting his stride as a winemaker, releasing some delicious, well-crafted wines.

I think we'll be seeing a marked improvement in the wines we see coming out of Long Island's largest winery. At least we can all hope so.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about a new producer on the North Fork, Sparkling Pointe. They aren't the only new kid on the block though. Stay tuned to future columns to learn more about Bouke - a label focused on aromatic, everyday wines, and Onabay Vineyards, another winery making its debut this summer.

Spanish wines offer an alternative in taste to those jaded with the usual varietals such as Cabernet, Syrah, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Indeed, Spain's vineyards are planted with more than 800 grape varieties, mostly native and unique to Spain.

Imagine enjoying wines made from grapes such as Tempranillo, Albario, Garnacha, Palomino, Airen, Macabeo, Parellada, Xarello, Cariena and Monastrell.

Tempranillo is one most will be familiar with for it is the famous grape of Rioja.

Tempranillo is redolent with flavours of cherry, plum, liquorice, chocolate, tobacco and spice.

It can be a little lacking in weight and bright acidity and so is often blended with, say, Garnacha (Grenache) for strength, whilst grapes such as Graciano are added to boost tannins and Carinena grapes contributed more colour and acidity in the finished wine.

Key lime pie: As rich in history as it is in calories

A glass of chilled dessert wine along side would be as rich as pirate's treasure.

Muscat comes to mind for its sweet tropical fruit flavors and because, if I really wanted to wreck and plunder a pun, pirates kept one in their belt — right next to their sword.

Enjoy.

Murray's midas touch

This is a powerful wine that needs cellaring and will improve with decanting. Blood-red in the glass, it has an autumnal, vegetal character reminiscent of the forest floor. Interestingly, it is fruitier on the palate, with cherry flavours coming through. The tannins are quite lively and there is a long, spicy finish.2005 Beaune Cent Vignes, Domaine Jessiaume Père et Fils, Burgundy, France, 13%, £19.49An altogether more rounded and hedonistic wine, with soft, forward plum, raspberry and black-cherry flavours. The spiciness is present but there is an attractive suppleness too.2006 Volnay Brouillards, Domaine Jessiaume, Burgundy, France, 13%, £26.83A class act, bursting with notes of ripe cherry that sit above a gentle vegetal aroma. The palate is incredibly supple, with silky, soft tannins, while the strength of the acidity refreshes.

Star winemaker debuts at Telluride Wine Fest

In 1969, a neighbor took Foley to a dank, dark cellar at one of California's most venerable wineries, where the precocious teenager tasted directly from a cask of Inglenook 1968 Charbono, a lesser known grape. "All my senses told me I wanted to make wines as good as that," Foley said. "With some nudging, I decided to take my musical interests with me to UC Davis and study winemaking, graduating with degrees in viticulture and enology. Fast forward to 2002, when I was introduced to the guy who produced the Charbono that got me started. He sold me a couple of tons of that grape and within two years, I took over his entire production." There is an on going debate in the grape world between so-called terroirists and winemaking scientists/technologists. Terroirists (terroir means "land") believe climate, soil, exposure, plants, trees growing nearby, insects in the area, everything associated with a site, determine a wine's quality.

Discover Italian whites

It's a well known fact that Italy's red wines are supposed to be the "serious" wines to enjoy with food and fill your cellar with, while most Italian whites are for sipping on their own or to pair with light dishes.

Most of these wines are made from grapes that are only found in Italy, however, popularity of the international varieties is growing.

This week's column features the light, simple and refreshing wines of Italy.

Certainly, the better known white, the wines made from the Pinot Grigio (Pinot Gris) grapes have gained an impressive popularity over the past couple years. These wines tend to be light, dry, refreshing with a medium acidity.

They present aromas of citrus, flowers, white flesh fruits and melons. Some producers also blend some Chardonnay with this grape to give more structure and flavour to the final wine.

Constellation NZ Wine Made Global Priority

"NZ Wine is red hot internationally and there is huge growth available for companies with the capacity to meet and sustain it. Most wine lovers world-wide know about our wines and our reputation for quality. But the great majority of wine drinkers off-shore are still yet to taste a New Zealand wine. To have the global reach of Constellation focussed on the Kim Crawford brand means we are poised to take advantage of that opportunity. An opportunity that began with Sauvignon Blanc but we are able to extend now into other varieties like Pinot Gris, Pinto Noir and Merlot."

Following the acquisition of Kim Crawford Wines by Constellation NZ, Kim Crawford was contracted to the company until February of this year. Kim left an exceptional team to carry on the future of the brand that he co-founded 11 years ago with Erica Crawford.

Screwcaps to Rule Wine World by 2015

We won't move away from cork-we'd rather pay more and get better quality and keep tighter checks during wine making.

His favourite expression is, 'using screwcaps on fine wine bottle is like going to a Fine dining French restaurant and asking for a hamburger.'

Looking at the number of people eating hamburgers , it appears India is developing more and more appetite for hamburgers.

Give a wedding gift with a twist

Give the newlyweds a head start on their personal wine cellar with a membership to a wine-of-the-month club.

"It's the gift that keeps on giving," says Megan Howard, editor-in-chief at Gifts.com, a gift recommendation and advice Web site offering 1,500 wedding-gift options. "You can give a three- to 12-month membership."

Prices range from $108 to $408. You also can opt for the Wine of the Season Club (for about $150), where a new wine is delivered four times a year.

Another wine option, Howard says, is going to a local wine shop and asking the store experts which wine would ideally mature in 10 years. Then, gift that wine and wish the couple a "long and lasting marriage," she says.

Also, personalized champagne flutes are always a lovely gift, Howard says.

Wines under $10 take it easy on your wallet

Rising gas prices and other market reactions are playing havoc with household budgets - and the money we spend on a good bottle of wine. This week, let's look at wine bargains that will be sympathetic to your wallet and pleasing to your palate.

Gascon 2006 Malbec

I love Argentina Malbecs - and this example from the high-altitude wine country of Mendoza is classic in style and a real steal at $9.99 (Johnnie Ganem Package Shop). Made from 100 percent Malbec grown in a 50-year-old vineyard, the wine is aged in 30 percent new French oak barrels and 70 percent 2-3 year-old French oak barrels. Don't be afraid of this wine being too tannic - blending results in a well-rounded wine with nice textures.

Gascon Malbec has a concentrated nose of ripe black cherry fruit with notes of vanilla and chocolate.

Blumenthal lauded for chocolate wine

Michelin-starred techno-chef Heston Blumenthal OBE has won a Conde Nast Traveller Innovation Design Award for his chocolate wine.

Blumenthal was nominated for the gourmet category of the awards, and praised for 'splicing grapes with cocoa beans' at the awards ceremony held earlier this week. The wine, served as a dessert, is made by reducing a bottle of fortified, sweet red Maury wine from southwest France, and blending it with milk and chocolate shavings. Blumenthal, who Sunday Times restaurant critic AA Gill once called ' a combination of Jackass dadaist, Freudian analyst and Frankenstein', is widely known for his unusual dishes. Favourites at his Fat Duck restaurant in Bray, Berkshire, include snail porridge, salmon poached in liquorice gel, and sardine-on-toast sorbet.

Through fire and wine

What could be better than coming to your favorite restaurant, sitting at the bar and tasting a number of new dishes specially prepared by the chef? Or perhaps it could be just going to that same restaurant and meeting friends there. Every restaurateur is glad to have a circle of regular clients who are already old acquaintances. Some try to expand the circle of regulars with the help of marketing promotions such as Internet updates, birthday cakes delivered to the home and parties at clubs, but restaurant owners who like to host will also mention conversations with customers, shared events and holidays and special requests that are met to the last detail.

The customers, for their part, are happy to find an attentive ear to requests and whims, and primarily a place that is essentially an extension of the living room at home.

Loveland winery a pioneer in industry

LOVELAND - It doesn't seem that long ago that Tim Merrick and his partners put up their Trail Ridge Winery sign in west Loveland and opened for business, prompting some locals to scratch their heads and wonder if Colorado wine was even possible.

But that was way back in 1994, when Trail Ridge was only the 15th winery in the state.

The 75-plus-bottle Italian wine list emphasizes boutique winemakers and is arranged by regions such as the Adriatic Apennines and Alpine Border.

WINE: Family policies a tool to keep business separate

Amid the tax, estate and strategic planning that goes into helping a family business survive from generation to generation, wine industry families such as the Seghesios of Alexander Valley are increasingly codifying guidelines for relationships between relatives and the business.

In the wake of a jolting 1993 tax audit that led to a generational transfer of the company, the new generation of Seghesios started implementing new company governance, President and CEO Peter Seghesio said at the Business Journal Wine Industry Conference earlier this month.

Key to better governance for the Seghesios was the drafting of a family policy and directives document. Such documents are common with family businesses in other industries but are only starting to garner attention in the wine business, according to Deborah Steinthal of Scion Advisors in Napa.

Latest Grange release excites buyers' palates

SALES of luxury yachts and Bentleys may be on the slide, but Penfolds is expecting cashed-up wine lovers to snap up the latest vintage of its blockbuster Grange red when it goes on sale today.

Priced at about $550, the 2003 vintage of Australia's most famous wine is a blend of 96.5 per cent shiraz and 3.5 per cent cabernet sauvignon, described by Penfolds' chief winemaker Peter Gago as "solid and stoic".

"In hard times like this, people turn away from gold and buy wine," Mr Gago said.

"You can always rely on Grange."

Demand consistently outstrips annual production of 7000 to 9000 cases, ensuring a brisk trade among collectors.

Mr Gago said there was already talk among wine cognoscente that the 2004 vintage would rival the great 1990 vintage that catapulted Grange to international stardom after being named the greatest red in the world by influential US wine critic Robert Parker.

Making sense of French wines

French wines have long been the benchmark for winemakers around the world for style, flavour and complexity - but for the rest of us, making sense of the various regions listed on French wine labels and translating them back to wine varieties we recognise, can be a little difficult.

Below are some of the best known French wine regions and the predominate grape varieties grown in each, so next time you pick a bottle off the shelf you don't have to scratch your head to figure out if it's a Chardonnay or a Sauvignon Blanc!

Chablis - This is a region in northern Burgundy well known for Chardonnay. It's a restrained, elegant and minerally style of wine.

Pouilly-Fuissé - Is another style of Chardonnay, from central Burgundy.

Sancerre - Situated in the eastern Loire valley, the wines are mainly Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Wine Vending Machines: State Wants Vendors

State liquor officials are seeking proposals for a contractor to operate up to 100 wine kiosks throughout the state.

Wendell Young IV, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776, whose members include state store clerks, was among those briefed on the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board proposal. .

The Wine Press: Washington wines hold their own against California's

The state of the state of Washington has changed.</p><p>Seattle suburbs are sprouting their own little skyscrapers like there's no recession. The Tri-Cities, which used to remind me of a sleepy agricultural community, now seems like a metropolis in the making, complete with neighborhoods and ethnic enclaves.</p><p>Even Walla Walla is getting into the act of being hip and dynamic or, well, at least it's rapidly growing. Heck, two years ago, Walla Walla might as well have been in Idaho.</p><p>But even if Walla Walla isn't your idea of a teeming city-scape, the vineyards have spread out like greenery on an untended vine, and in every direction, new plantings surround the town.</p><p>Not so long ago people heard Walla Walla and thought onions; now they should think wine.

Corkheads: Breaking through a wine glass ceiling

When you think of women and wine, what do you imagine? Bubble gum labels like Pink Umbrella and Working Girl? Tasting groups marrying Mary Kay with Chardonnay?

It's this lowbrow marketing that probably propelled a male industry colleague of mine to recently quip — in response to this weekend's Women For WineSense Grand Event — "Women and wine? What's the big deal?"

Well, I'm here to tell him. The big deal is that only 15 years ago, a salesman walked into Handley Cellars and asked founder and winemaker Milla Handley where the winemaker was.

The big deal is that a woman like Mary Hall of Harlan Estate is actually considered a trailblazer for breaking into vineyard management 20 years ago.

If you believe the research coming out of UC Davis, genetically speaking, women are better tasters than men.

Marinara wine pairs

It's time to break out of your Chianti rut.

If you reach for that trusty Tuscan every time pasta and red sauce hit the table, you're missing out on a world of great pairings, says Gary Vaynerchuk, the energetic host of the Web program Wine Library TV.

When it comes to mating wine with marinara, Vaynerchuk advocates breaking with tradition.

"This will surprise many, but I often drink WHITE wine with marinara sauce," he said via e-mail.

"No, I'm not talking California chardonnay, and I don't want a lot of oak. A white wine that is rich yet crisp works tremendously."

It works because high-acid whites can complement the acidity of the tomatoes, says Vaynerchuk, author of the forthcoming "Gary Vaynerchuk's 101 Wines Guaranteed to Inspire, Delight and Bring Thunder to Your World."

Among his suggestions - the Domaine Baubiac Viognier 2004 ($17), which he calls "a terrific food wine with back end acidity that would complement a lighter sauce very well."

Particularly bold marinaras, including those loaded with garlic, may need a hearty red.

‘Stoic’ new Grange for $550

Peter Gago feels more pressure each year when making Australia's most famous wine, Penfolds' Grange.

But he is supremely confident about the 2003 Grange to be released today with a price tag of around $550 a bottle.

“It's right up there with the strong ones," Mr Gago said yesterday.

“From our perspective it's very solid. I have used the word stoic Grange — it's the real thing.

“The '03 has got all of those layers of complexity that will take it 30, 40, 50 years."

The 2003 Grange feature primarily Barossa Valley shiraz, with smaller amounts of shiraz from McLaren Vale, south of Adelaide, and Penfolds' Magill Estate vineyard in metropolitan Adelaide.

Champagne, Switzerland, Gets No Kick from Its Name

CHAMPAGNE, Switzerland: Makers of sparkling wine in the United States, Russia and Ukraine can appropriate the Champagne name for their products, but an innocent baking company in this tiny Swiss town is out of luck.Marc-Andre Cornu was salmon fishing in Norway when he got word. His secretary was on the line, saying that lawyers for the Swiss distributors of French Champagne had written to say he could no longer use the brand name his family had used since the 1930s. Three generations, beginning with his grandfather, had labeled their breadsticks and cookies "de Champagne," after their Swiss village, nestled among the vineyards that creep north from the shores of Lake Neuchtel. The lawyers' letters were only the first twist in a legal tangle as intricate as the gnarled and knotty grape vines hereabouts. In 1998, Switzerland reached an accord with the European Union that allowed its former national airline, Swissair, to make stopovers in European Union cities.

Grange winemaker feels the pressure

Peter Gago feels more pressure each year when making Australia's most famous wine, Penfolds' Grange.

But he's supremely confident about the 2003 Grange to be released tomorrow with a price tag around $550 a bottle.

“It's right up there with the strong ones," Gago said today.

“We have had a number of reviews so far and the points given to it vary from 94 to 98 (out of 100) around the world from the few journalists who have seen it.

“From our perspective it's very solid, I have used the word stoic Grange – it's the real thing.

“Grange has never been the most alcoholic, or the most oaky, or highest extract, or most concentrated wine in Australia, it doesn't want to be.

“But the 03 has got all of those layers of complexity that will take it 30, 40, 50 years."

As chief winemaker at Penfolds, Gago acknowledges the pressure of making a wine officially declared a heritage icon by the National Trust of South Australia.
